“At any point in life, the moment we live defines who we are.”
A digital community manager at UNC by day, a true “Parisian” with his cultural inclinations by night.
This month at #uncportraits, Caner Cankişi talked about himself, -like he does.
Who am I? Why not ask a few friends instead? I mean, if I were to start writing about myself, I would probably write something new each day, only to discard it the next day as I sit to write again. Yesterday I was a dedicated gym member, waking up in the middle of the night to pen my biceps training routine and a diet plan while listening to Sibelius Violin Concerto, while the day before that I was a francophile, set out to write an essay on French Riviera, only to find myself ordering La Côte d’Azur by Stèphen Liègard from Amazon. Simply put, I am a collector of dijital emotions, who feeds on knowledge he gathers everyday with the help of his broad collection of social masks, and uses this knowledge as a fuel to create.
I was born in Istanbul in 1987, and became who I am today thanks to a series of serious mistakes I’ve made in the past 29 years. Knowing perfectly well that I was never going to become a veterinarian, I have studied at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine for two years; eventually dropping out to study journalism. Always hungry for more knowledge, I adopted the well known philosophy “Google it”. As a result of what I would call looking for excitement, I made a bumpy transition to organization business. Googling “it” was difficult on the field, digital world was as tempting as ever; I met Fatih Güner, and my integration to digital has thus begun.
“One question, so what is your focus on the vast universe of the digital?”
To completely focus on a particular thing in modern times is unfair to the rest you shut yourself off from. My main thing is to partake in the lives of those that I have a very slim chance of sharing anything, and communicate with them. The thing I like the most about what I do is to be able to produce what is highly consumable, to be highly noticeable, and to be able to communicate with others. That is what counts. By the way, the key to this lies in the digital world beneath our fingertips, particularly in social media.
I am always motivated by two quotes. One is from Aldous Huxley: “Try to learn something about everything, and everything about something.” -although I am never satisfied enough to say that I know everything about any particular thing. The other is from Igor Stravinsky: “A good composer does not imitate; he steals.”
I take inspiration from knowledge and awareness; that’s why I am always hungry to learn more, and in love with the process of learning. Because everything you have learned throughout your life, every bit of information from unrelated worlds, seeming impossible to intersect, come together in an unexplainable way in the creative process, producing unpredictable results at the end. I have a lot of dreams, and I have a lot to do. By the way, I have my eyes on Cyber Lions, so anyone with a similar ambition may step closer!
